Surface Preparation

When it comes to removing all types of coatings, glues, mastics, thinset, overlays, microtoppings and self leveling compounds we have the tools for you.

PCD Half moon shavers

— for light coating and glue removal with minimal intrusion into the substrate

HyperGrind metal bond

— for light coating and glue removal with medium exposure of aggregate

HyperCut PCD metal bond combination

— for heavy removal of coatings etc. with medium to heavy aggregate exposure

Grinding

For all types of grinding situations we have a very unique line of tools. Starting with titanium coated natural diamonds, which are more friable than synthetic diamonds and hence present a sharper point throughout the life of the diamond. We then have a titanium bond segment which holds the diamonds for 80% of their wear factor before releasing from the bond. The titanium bond also prevents glazing, premature wear and tempering that occurs in standard metal bond tools. This gives the advantage of using a universal bond for all types of aggregate and mixes regardless of surface hardness.

Transition and Honing Tools

Transition tools are used when going from metal bond grinding to honing. This allows the operator to transition from a coarse scratch pattern to a finer one. A good example of this is our Shark Pad, which utilizes a combination of metal and resin bond segments. This enables very aggressive cutting in relation to the grit number while leaving a very smooth profile. The combination of the metal segment with the resin also gives a much longer life for the tool than if it was only a resin bond. These tools also have excellent performance and life when wet cutting.

When a floor is wavy and minimal or no aggregate exposure is desired, then it is possible to get the honing effect as low as 15 or 30 grit when using the HyperGloss or WaterGloss pads, which are resin bond only. These pads are very flexible yet due to the segment size and type, they do not cause any orange peel effect. Orange peeling occurs when the cement paste and or softer aggregate is eaten away from the harder aggregates causing a hammered or dimpled effect like the skin of an orange. It becomes more noticeable the bigger the aggregate exposure. On floors with large hard and soft aggregates it can resemble an alligator skin and be referred to as alligatoring. In these situations a rigid tool must be used even when using the resins up to about 800 grit.

Polishing

When polishing we have a variety of options and systems that can be used depending on the floor and the desired finish. The goal should be to achieve the best results in the least amount of steps. This means that for a very high shine with great depth and clarity you would generally not skip any grits or steps. This is particularly true when using standard tools and systems. However with the type of resins and the combinations of tools that we have available we can achieve excellent results with significantly less steps than conventional tools. Our HyperGloss System for Concrete and Terrazzo is an example of this. This system allows you to go from PCD removal to an 800-grit polish in 6 steps or less. See Systems for more in depth information.
